When did we start having recycling numbers on plastic?

    The whole system of SPI resin identification, for the purposes of recycling, began in 1988.  The point of the system was to separate and identify different types of recyclable, resin-based plastics.  While many may think that higher numbers indicate greater recycling difficulty, this is in fact untrue.  It merely identifies the specific type of plastic used in the item.
