A few interesting chemicals that can pollute ground water are nitrates and phosphates from sewage and fertilizer.  These nutrients can overstimulate flora life, throwing any ecosystem off-balance.

Categories of chemical agents that commonly pollute groundwater sources are nitrates, synthetic organic chemicals (SOCs), volatile organic chemicals (VOCs), and heavy metals.  SOCs include pesticides, herbicides, such as atrazine, and flame retardants.  VOCs include fuels, such as gasoline, and solvents, such as dry cleaning chemicals.  Heavy metals include lead, arsenic, chromium.
