In 2009 the U.S. mined a total of just over one billion short tons of coal.  This came from 1,406 mines across the country, with a majority of the mines located in the Appalachian region.  Kentucky, West Virginia and Pennsylvania were the three leading coal producing states in 2009.

Actually Wyoming is the leading coal producing state, with more than triple the #2 producer (West Virginia). Wyoming produced more than West Virginia, Kentucky, and Pennsylvania combined.
