There sure are. One good one is Soles4Souls. I’ve included their website as a citiation. But there are many more. Generally a good rule of thumb (and term you hear thrown around) is “gently used”. If your old running shoes are completely broken and busted they’re probly not as in high demand, as ones that are still usable, just not exactly pristine.

Sole4Souls is a charity that donates old shoes to tsunami victims. They have 3 locations in Alabama, Tennessee and Nevada.

Local shelters take such donations as well.  Women and children’s shelters are in constant need of provisions like running shoes.  Salvation Army also accepts shoes for donations.

Oddly, food banks accept clothing (shoes included) donations. In fact, given that those utilizing food banks are often homeless, shoes are often the first on the list of needed items. And the more athletic, the better–considering the wear and tear and amount of walking that is part of homelessness.

Yes! If you live near or in the Bay Area, in Northern California, you can help. Edgar Hernandez, a 44 year old resident of San Rafael, California, has taken it upon himself to bring literally thousands of used running shoes back to his native Guatemala. Twice a year he returns to Guatemala with 2 50lb suitcases full of running shoes. The rest he mails there using his own money. Hernandez was a runner growing up in Guatemala and had only 2 pairs of running shoes in 10 years. Now when he returns, he gives them out at races and to running clubs, benefiting countless young athletes in a developing country. If you want to donate your shoes the locations are:

Archrival Mill Valley- 800 Redwood Highway Frontage # 206

    Mill Valley, CA 94941

Archrival Greenbrae- 150 Bon Air Center

    Greenbrae, CA 94904

Sports Basement Presidio- 610 Old Mason St San Francisco, CA 94129

Sports Basement Walnut Creek- 1881 Ygnacio Valley Road Walnut Creek, CA 94598

Road Runner Sports- 1125 Industrial Road San Carlos, CA 94070
