Would zero- and negative population growth be good or bad for human society?

Negative population growth can be a bad thing socially and economically, because it reduces the number of people entering the workforce as a larger population is leaving it. That presents issues particularly with things like social security which depends on the current working generation’s money to support the current retired generation. In more general terms, it means there are less able-bodied men and women to support the old and ailing. That can be problematic because unless efficiency increases dramatically, output and productive may fall as well.
