Would the world be any worse off without mosquitoes or biting flies?

    Yes. For one thing mosquitoes and mosquito larvae provide food for a number of bird populations, including the American Cardinal. In addition, mosquitoes do a good job of defending rainforests and wetlands from human exploitation. Throughout much of history, stubborn mosquito populations have defended “the last outposts of ferns, butterflies, and bees” from greedy human developers.
