Would we be better off if we still burned wood and coal for heat and candles for light but didn’t have cars or electricity?

Well, the term “better off” is really relative here. For example, without electricity I would not be able to breathe at night (I have obstructive sleep apnea), so I don’t think I personally would be better off.

As for the environment, I think the pollution from personal wood and coal use would likely be less than that used now with the addition of electricity and cars. But would we be better off? I think for the most part, mankind has benefitted from electricity, and to some extent, vehicles as well.
