Would we be able to survive if the rainforest was gone?

The percentage of the Earth’s oxygen produced by rainforests is in dispute. One estimate states that the Amazon alone provides 20% of the oxygen we breathe. One can imagine humankind surviving even without any rainforests at all, though the quality of that life and the ability to sustain it would be quite low. Many people rely on the rainforests more directly for their lives, such as the nearly fifty groups of indigenous peoples in the Amazon region who still keep mainly to themselves. Without the forest to house, clothe, and feed them their cultures would almost certainly become extinct.
