Would we be able to survive if earth was closer to the sun?

Depends on what your definition of ‘closer’ is. Earth is located within the ‘habitable zone’ of the sun, a region far enough away to allow for liquid water (a vital component of life) to exist but close enough so that it won’t freeze. If the Earth was closer but still within the habitable zone, we would be fine. However if the Earth was closer to the sun to where it was outside the habitable zone, the liquid water on Earth would dry up and kill all life.
