Manatees are more often killed by boat collisions. These animals are slow-moving so they usually cannot move out of the way before a boat reaches them. The impact of a fast-moving boat can cause severe damage to manatees so yes, by limiting boat speeds in certain areas, the number of manatees killed by such fast-moving collisions may be prevented. In either case, if a manatee is hit by a boat, the injuries probably won’t be life-threatening with slower moving boats.
