Would New Orleans have been built if we didn’t use levees?
Levees have been important in the development of New Orleans because much of the city is actually below sea level. This has been a contributing factor to flooding in recent years. Before the 1890s the city’s rain runoff and raw sewage were both channeled to the Mississippi River. This led to outbreaks of disease, since the water often overflowed back in to the city.
