Burying a water tank could be a good idea in a extremely cold or hot environment. This is because the ground can work as an extra layer of insulator that keeps the water either from freezing or becoming too hot because of air temperatures. The problem with burying your tank is that you would not be able to install a gravity drain and would need to get a pump to get water out.
