Yes. Global warming is leading to mass extinctions, and we could put a stop to it if enough people truly wanted to. However, if humans–the primary polluters–all died, the earth would have a chance to recover from all that we’ve done to it. So, the Earth doesn’t need us, but if we want to stick around for generations to come, we have to take care of it, since it’s already on the way downhill because of our actions. The Wikipedia on Human Extinction is a good beginning resource for possible doomsday scenarios, as well.
