Wood flooring is generally better for one’s health. Carpets often contain a large amount of synthetic chemicals used to sustain the carpet’s color, keep it fire proof and resistant to stains; these chemicals will outgas for several years in most carpets. It is also easier to spot dirt, dust, mildew, etc. on a wood floor than carpet, making it easier to keep clean and thus a healthier choice overall.
It depends on the type and materials use to construct the flooring. Some wood sealants can be toxin while some carpets may use synthetic materials that are produce with toxic chemical. Additionally, the reverse is also true. If you wanted to know whether or not the material is toxic to health you should look for green labels as well as check the material contents.
