A wolf howling can definitely be heard at a greater distance than a coyote’s yip. High frequency sounds don’t travel as far as low frequency sounds. As wolves are pack animals and need to communicate over large distances (sometimes several miles) with other pack members, they use the lower frequency howl to do this. A coyote’s yip is of a much higher frequency and used when communicating within close range.
