Is windshield washer fluid bad for the environment?

There is definitely concern over some of the components of windshield washer fluid, especially volatile organic compounds. Many types of fluid also contain methanol and ethanol, and a Canadian study even pointed to evidence of the fluid’s contribution to the formation of ozone. A Japanese study found detrimental effects of bitumen on concrete structures. Finally, the concern is more with the cumulative effects of gallons and gallons of fluid, not on the individual application you use on your car at one time.
