Wind power is not the cheapest type of renewable energy. However, wind is up there in terms of cheap renewable energy. According to a study conducted by NYU, geothermal. The Department of Energy states that it cost between 4 to 6 cents per kilowatt-hour to make, on par with coal.

The problem with geothermal (and wind) is the high start-up costs. But in terms of producing electricity, geothermal, followed by wind, is not only cheap as coal, but also environmentally friendly.
