There is definitely a big interest in getting planes to run on biofuels with the likes of Richard Branson and Boeing leading the way. Virgin Atlantic (Richard Branson’s company) was the first airline to fly a commercial plane with biofuel back in early 2008. However, the plane ran only one of its four engines on the experimental fuel whereas the other 3 were burned using standard fuel. Boeing made strides in biofuel research in 2009 when it struck a partnership with a division of Honeywell to study the sustainability of using saltwater-drinking plants to generate renewable jet fuel. If the ongoing research on alternative fuels and carbon regulations are any indication, there will be a big advance in biofuel on planes in the near future (starting with the year 2010)!
