A finite amount of gold exists, so it is possible that we could run out depending on mining patterns. Recent studies estimate that there is roughly 50,000 tons of gold left to be mined. Over the history of gold mining, 140,000 tons have been mined and 20,000 tons of this has been lost. Global consumption rates of gold is averaging 3,760 tons a year, so if we keep this up and the numbers are correct, we very well could run out of gold. However, consumptions rates may change, new deposits can be found, and gold can be reused, so it is impossible to say whether it will ever completely run out.
