It is up to us to clean up as much oil as we can, but in terms of repairing the damage, mother nature has to do that. It takes nearly 50 years for an area to recover after a spill like this, however in the past, recovery has begun to take place in as little as three years.
Nature will take its course and only time will tell. It could be done within a year if enough people assist. I’d love to tell you I knew the answer but it’s hard to say.
I have to disagree that the damage from the spill could be repaired within a year. I believe it will take us many years to even begin to fully understand the extent of the damage. As meg707 says, it takes decades for natural processes to repair the region.
