Solar tariffs in the U.S. are based on those set in place in parts of Europe, in which utility companies pay a fee (essentially, a tax) to use solar energy. This tariff is meant to encourage the use and growth of solar energy as opposed to conventional energy. This in turn can reduce the costs of installing solar panel generators, a move that can benefit residents as well as businesses. Many states are imposing this tariff, including California.
