It’s certainly possible, but current supermarkets have a long way to go (even markets like Whole Foods). For one, they’d have to make sure the food is organic and grown without pesticides. They also have to make sure all their food is sustainable (Trader Joe’s caught flak for this regarding their fish selection). Beyond that, cleaning supplies used to clean the floors should be green, lights need to be turned off, efficient lighting used, and hopefully bags and price tags replaced with a greener option.
So, it’s certainly possible for supermarkets to be considered green, but they need to take many things into consideration, and it’ll take a lot of work and time. I’m sure eventually we’ll get some truly green supermarkets, though.
