According to the EPA Web site below, bauxite (which is used to make aluminum cans) does not decompose or break down on its own, so “an aluminum can will always be an aluminum can” unless it is recycled. Other (unverified) sources say it takes hundreds of years for a can to decompose, but basically the idea is the same — just recycle them.
