Most salt water fish won’t swim into freshwater accidentally, but, yes, most will die from taking up too much water if placed in fresh water. Some salt water fish can survive freshwater but only because they have mechanisms for actively pumping out excess water. Two examples are eels and salmon. These organisms have freshwater and saltwater stages in their life cycles.
