Yes, the environmental conference will bring developed countries together to find solutions for environmental problems. Countries that would otherwise take no action for the environment will be subjected to political and nationalist pressures to step it up. They’re working on emission cuts to prevent global warming from getting too bad.
As pauleen said, the best aspect of the conference is simply bringing many diverse countries to the table and holding themselves accountable. Ultimately, any multinational governing body such as the U.N. or EU won’t be able to enforce or enact policies for the environment – it’s in the hands of each individual country. Keeping the discourse open and signing items like the Kyoto protocol are important steps, and the Cancun talks are fostering more discussion amongst nations and leaders.
