Will the proliferation of electric cars cause an energy crisis?

If electric cars become so abundant that their demand for electricity exceeds that which can be generated, then yes.

While many things, including green alternatives, can be used to generate electricity, right now 84% of US electricity comes from non-renewable coal, natural gas, or uranium. If electric car numbers go up a lot, quickly, the only reasonable way to scale up electricity generation quickly is by mining and burning more coal.
