Will a plastic grocery bag ever break down in a landfill?

Yes, but it takes around a thousand years to do so. The dry conditions in landfills slow down decomposition to an extent that even biodegradable items take many years to break down.

There are bacteria that can break down the plastic much faster, however, like stated above, the conditions usually aren’t right in a landfill.
