That depends on the tree and its placement. In an area where the pine tree is the tallest in its stand (its group of trees), the pine should be able to survive. However, because trees compete for sunlight and moisture, if the tree is not the tallest, there’s a good chance that it will get sickly and might even die without its top. The top is the part of the tree that gets most of the sunlight if it’s tall enough, so in the event that you need to thin out a tree, start with the bottom, not the top.
