The short answer is that old prescription bottles will most likely not biodegrade. They can, however, be recycled in some places. To recycle old pill bottles: remove the lid and label. Most pill bottles should have their recycling number printed on the bottom.
One tidbit I discovered in looking for an answer is this: even some biodegradable materials will not biodegrade in landfills. Even an apple core (according to some studies) will not biodegrade in a landfill. The best way to take advantage of biodegradable materials is to place them in your compost bin.
