Will newer, smaller nuclear power plants be any safer than larger ones?

Not especially. Nuclear power in general is safer than is popularly believed, thanks to a couple of spectacular failures of the safety systems in the past few decades. Smaller plants might be more efficient, but most of the danger lies in the waste, which smaller plants would still produce.

Ask if a small bomb is safer than a big bomb. The potention for a disasterous radiation leak or explosion can be seen in recent months from Japan. The numbers ($) to build and maintain a nuclear plant isn’t easely offset by the useful energy we can get from the atom reactors.
