I do not think people would become extinct, but a large portion of the world population would die, because so many of us rely on the mass production of food in order to eat. After a super volcano eruption, the global temperature will drop several degrees Celsius, which will kill crops worldwide. It is not so much the effects of the volcano itself, rather the silica and SO2 that will get stuck in our atmosphere for several years after the volcano erupts. This is called the “haze effect” and is capable of creating global cooling. There are several smaller volcanoes that have affected the climate in the past, which can be read about at the site below.
