At present, a dramatic increase in electric car numbers would mean a need for more electricity, which can only be generated in large volume quickly by mining more coal. So it would improve the US coal mining industry. Such cars would also need large quantities of neodymium (in the motors) and lanthanum and lithium (in the batteries). That would stimulate the economies of China and Chile, the primary sources of imports for those critical materials.
