Will groundwater clean itself if it has been contaminated?

Groundwater does not usually clean itself when it has been contaminated. This is because it does not really have a chance to flow through the earth, which could cleanse it. Also, it is not exposed to sunlight, which aids in a process of evaporation that can clean other forms of water. The fact of the permanency of contaminated groundwater is one of the worst things about this type of water.
