Desertification is caused when soil moisture and vegetation are lost and the top soil greatly deteriorates. The loss of moisture in the soil is caused by overgrazing, over-drafting ground water, diversion of rivers for human consumption, and decreased rain because of climate change. Using the desert for green energy projects will not add to any of these harmful effects, but could help slow the process of desertification if it decreased the reliance on petroleum based energy and emissions of carbon.
