BP is mandated by NEPA (nat’l environmental policy act) to provide an impact report for every new drilling lease they get in US waters. However, the US Department of the Interior gave BP a waiver on the report for the very rig that blew up and caused this whole fiasco. Between 250 and 400 such waivers are given every year to new Gulf of Mexico projects. The matter has passed from BP’s hands now to the federal government, and BP will likely be made to account for the environmental impact in the form of lawsuit.
