A: Yes, excluding salt water, of course. Boil water for up to ten minutes, then add a minute for every 300 meters (approximately 1000 feet) you are above sea level. So, for instance, if you are 5000 feet above sea level, you would boil the water for up to 15 minutes. This will rid the water of most parasites, including Hepatitis A.
If boiling is not possible, then treat the water with bleach or iodine tablets. With bleach, any household brand will do; add 3-5 drops per quart, depending on the murkiness of the water. Iodine tablets should rest in the water for at least 30 minutes, possibly more if the water is cloudy.
