Will beavers attack humans if they feel threatened?

Beavers are actually considered quite territorial and can attack humans if threatened.  This would most likely occur during the beaver’s breeding season (Jan-March).  Because beavers inhabit wetland areas where contact with humans is decreased, attacks on humans are rare.  However, there have been a few accounts where a beaver attacked a dog and a fisherman (see URLs below for news articles).

There are several news reports of beavers attacking humans. Generally after this happens, the beavers are tested for rabies, as they can be carriers and can pass the disease on to humans.
