Steel or aluminum water bottles are said to be more durable than plastic reusable ones (like Nalgene), and are definitely more durable than the plastic, one-time-use bottles of store bought water. From personal experience, the Nalgene-like bottles begin to go from clear to slightly cloudy in a year. This is because the plastic is eroding away (leeching the harmful toxic substance BPA into your drinking water). I have had a stainless steel Kleen Kanteen for 2 years, and while it has a few dings in it, it has not rusted or had bad taste ever.
