There are lots of reasons why people choose a gluten-free diet. Many people do not have a choice because they develop Celiac Disease. People who have this condition cannot eat gluten because their small intestine swells as a reaction to gluten. But there are reasons that other people would willingly choose to give up gluten. First, a diet free of gluten is very low in carbohydrates which can make it easier to lose weight and can help to lower cholesterol. Also, gluten-free diets can help ameliorate other medical condistions such as arthritis, joint pain, los of balance, and memory issues. Gluten-free diets can also help people who are having problems with fatigue.
Most people who follow a gluten-free diet have celiac disease. This is an allergy to gluten that causes intestinal problems if gluten products are digested. Some may choose a gluten-free diet because some of the options are healthier, too.
A gluten-free diet is a necessity for those with celiac disease, a disease that means they cannot digest the protein gluten. Consuming any products containing gluten can result in abdominal pain, bloating, and diarrhea, but can also be accompanied by a skin rash, muscle cramps, mouth sores, and other symptoms. There is no cure for celiac disease, the only way to make sure you are otherwise healthy is by eating a diet that does not contain any gluten. A gluten-free diet has recently been found to possibly help with other conditions though as well, including Parkinson’s disease, autism, seizures, multiple sclerosis, and anemia.
