Why were tomatoes once called “love apples?”

    When tomatoes reached Europe, the Italians called the predominant, yellow tomato “pomo d-oro” meaning apple of gold. The French, for some reason or another (though probably mistranslation or marketing) started calling the red variety pomme d’amour, the apple of love.
