Why were the birds slaughtered in Malta?

Every year birds migrate from breeding grounds in Europe down to Africa and then back again. The Maltese islands lie on the central migration route as a critical stepping stone between European and African. Large numbers of birds migrate over the Maltese islands every spring (en route to Europe) and autumn (en route to Africa). 384 species 32 can be legally hunted in the Maltese Islands, 12 of which can be legally hunted at sea. Birds are hunted for two main reasons—in some cases they are game for cooking, but the birds are mostly hunted as trophies for hunters to stuff and display.
