The riders were part of a protest movement called 350 Climate Action warning people that if the level of atmospheric carbon dioxide reaches more than 350 parts per million, the world’s climate could become unstable. On October 24, 2009 more than 5,000 activists around the world staged demonstrations. The snorkels and flippers worn by the riders were represented rising sea levels due to the melting of ice caps.
