Water is more important for survival than food because most of the human body is composed of water. When the body lacks water it cannot fully function. When we are young, our body is about 75 to 80% water. When we are older, the male body is 60 to 65% water, while the female body is 50 to 60% water. At the same time, our brains are about 85% water and our bones are 10 to 15% water. Water is very important not only for humans but for plants, animals, and our planet.
In terms of how long the human body can go without water, it is generally about 3 to 5 days and a day or so longer for healthier individuals. As for food, the consensus is that as long as a person has water then that individual can go about 8 weeks without food. This time period can increase or decrease depending on a person’s amount of body fat. It is also thought that people in top physical condition would be able to survive beyond 8 weeks.
One of the most dangerous things that a person can do to their own body is to get dehyrdated. Water is essential in keeping the body going because the body can’t work without it. Water plays many functions including maintaing a normal body temperature, keeps out metabolism normal, and protects the joints. Without water the body can’t survive.
