Why is the water off the coast of California so polluted?

The large population on the California coast and their habits contribute to the significant water pollution there. Industrial and agricultural activities lead to runoffs of pesticides, fertilizers, synthetic organic compounds, petroleum, and pathogens. Wastewater is discharged from facilities or finds its way to the ocean through urban storm water drainage.
