Why was it a problem that there were so many rats on rat island?

On Rat Island, Alaska, the population explosion of Norway rats was a problem because they were an invasive species that disturbed nesting bird populations. However, the US Fish and Wildlife Service successfully poisoned them out of existence as of 2009, leaving it rat-free for the first time in 229 years.
