Halliburton was a major contracter on BP’s Deepwater Horizon oil rig (the one which underwent the explosion to cause the oil spill). Apparently, they were aware that the cement used to seal the rig was unstable, and went ahead and used it.
More info here:
The cement Halliburton used in the Deepwater Horizon Oil Rig was meant to contain hydrocarbons from the ocean floor so as to prevent leakage and subsequent explosion. Three tests were conducted by Halliburton on the cement, all of which found the cement to be unstable. One of these tests was conducted a few days before the rig exploded. The results of a fourth test, the only one to show favorable results, only became available after Halliburton laid the cement, and so investigators from President Obama’s National Commission on BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill and Offshore Drilling concluded Halliburton shares fault with BP in the blast.
