Why was 2010 declared as the International Year of Biodiversity?

2010 was chosen to be the International Year of Biodiversity because of how biodiversity is dwindling around the world. The expansion of industry, modernization, and the use of natural resources is quickly ruining habitats. The goal of the International Year of Biodiversity is to raise people’s awareness of how biodiversity affects them, and to stop the destruction of species before it’s too late, since right now we’re at a very important point for the environment. We’re beginning to realize the impact we have upon the world, since it has readily manifested itself through extinction and mass migrations of species.
