Because freedom is important. If veal were illegal, all meat would have to be illegal. There is a lot of regulation of the veal industry, however, though often veal farmers fall short of the regulations, using illegal hormones or raising cows in poor conditions. Animal health standards are much higher in the UK than in America and many things that would be illegal there are still allowed here, such as crating the animal so that it’s muscles atrophy to produce tender meat. Regulations to avoid cruelty are key, rather than flat-out banning any food. Fortunately, veal isn’t a very popular meat anyway, with less than 1 in 100 housholds purchasing it.
