Why is the United States so addicted to oil?

We have more cars than any other nation (around a quarter of all the cars in the world), we have been using oil for gasoline fuel, and all its other uses, for 100+ years; we are the greatest consumer in the world by far, we have lifestyles that demand commuting, more often than not in cities that have no or trivial mass transit; we have suburban communities that demand cars to do anything, we have a society that is very mobile, with many people moving across state/country frequently.

We are addicted because the “American lifestyle” requires oil.

This is going to end fairly soon.
