Why is top soil so important to agriculture?

    Topsoil is important because it has the most bioactivity and highest levels of organic matter and nutrients.  Typically, most plants grow their roots into this layer of topsoil.  Loss of topsoil is one of the most significant barriers to agricultural progress.
